No doubt you’ve spent the best part of the last three months preparing for the holiday season, that effectively starts and finishes tomorrow!
Everyone around you is hyped up, ready to enjoy the holiday festivities, but for you, the stress is just beginning.
For many people, the holidays can feel like a huge disappointment. You’ve spent so long preparing, that the actual event can never reach your expectations.
So, if this is you, then try one or all of these, to brighten your day:
Always manage your holiday expectations.
Recognise that with all the commercialism surrounding the big day now, no one will ever meet the illusory success of a ‘TV’ Christmas.
Christmas should be a time for being with friends and family, enjoying the time together and giving thanks. It shouldn’t be a time for beating yourself up, because your gifts don’t always match up to what’s ‘expected’ by the media.
All that happens, when you think “I should have done better”, is you begin the dangerous spiral into disappointment and depression.
Spend this Christmas remembering that the best gift is the fact that you are here to enjoy it! Forget about the “should have” and “if only” thoughts and concentrate instead on noticing every good thing around you.
Let yourself off the hook and enjoy the celebrations.
Surround yourself with happy people.
Happiness really is contagious. Being around happy people makes us feel happy…. honest, it’s a scientific fact.
If you’re feeling a bit low, go spend some time with the friends, or family that always make you smile. What? You don’t have any friends that make you smile? Well, in that case, go watch a comedy show on TV, or go see something funny at the movies. Whatever it takes, just go do it!
Make someone else happy.
If you’re feeling lonely or isolated, why not volunteer to help out at a food bank, or your local church, etc. By volunteering to help organisations who help people who aren’t as fortunate, you not only make their clients’ Christmas more enjoyable but it’s a great way to focus outside yourself, and give you a huge gratitude boost.
Remember that all things pass.
Nothing lasts forever. Even your low times will pass, so be patient and trust that happiness and fun will return. You may wake up feeling down, but follow the steps above, give the day a chance and be thankful.
Make a decision to be happy. Spend time with happy people, help others and be thankful for everything you have.
Have a wonderful and fulfilling Holiday! 🙂
